In a law school personal statement, there are two fundamental issues that should be discussed. These are why you want to become a lawyer and what your qualifications are.
Before you start, you should think about the person that will be reading this. Some of the admissions people do this work 8 hours a day and by the end of the day, they are tired. If you start you statement out with the common "The reason I want to become a lawyer", you have already lost their attention and focus. They already know you want to become a lawyer, that is the reason you have applied to law school.
A common mistake is to focus on how you wish to help people. While this might be true, most of the top graduates from the top schools go to work in the private sector and make a great deal of money. This path only works if you worked for a non-profit group for a good period of time that focuses on helping others. Obtain documented evidence, like one of your letters of recommendation should be from the leader of this group.
Make your statement interesting, stand out from the crowd. Before you submit it, ask a friend to read it before they go to bed. If it puts them to sleep, rewrite it. Use plenty of personal details about yourself and be specific. Too many adjectives sound like a bloated message. Be articulate but be concise and to the point, as much as possible.
Mentioning a weakness shows you are human and honest with yourself. Just make sure you do not dwell on them.
Your law school personal statement is a chance to set you apart from the crowd, or get buried in it.
